Because this is a swim/bike/run event, many of the same training challenges that we face coaching triathletes apply to Xterra athletes as well.

The extra challenge of Xterra is in the technical aspects of trail running, mountain biking and open swim. As Melanie McQuaid pointed out, it’s a mistake for triathletes to enter the sport and think that being strong on the bike is enough.

Training for the biking component in particular has two sides. Much like mountain bikers, top Xterra athletes get their fitness from road riding and their technical form from mountain bike riding.

An Xterra Athlete We’ve Worked with...

Melanie McQuaid

Three time World Xterra Champion
Melanie understands better than most athletes the importance of training all three sports together. In the winter, she participates in most of the Centre’s cycling training camps. Even when doing a 26 hour week on the bike, she still finds an hour before the start of each day’s ride to run or swim.
